2/26/10 - In an effort to promote the use of solar power in California, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger recently signed into law bill AB 510, which raises the maximum level of net metering in the state from 2.5% to 5%. Under the new legislation, the State’s electric utilities are authorized to issue permits to, and enter agreements with, “customer-generators” for up to 5% of the utilities’ aggregate customer peak power demand. Large public entities such as the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) are already making great progress in equipping their facilities to capitalize on this untapped resource. During Governor Schwarzenegger’s public announcement of the bill’s passage, Cumming’s own Randy Britt, currently serving as the Director of Sustainability on LAUSD’s multi-billion dollar school improvement program, was asked to share some of the District’s solar initiatives under their comprehensive sustainability program. According to Britt, the District is currently finalizing the installation of 3.7 megawatts of renewable energy at eight school sites, which is expected to save the District approximately $1 million in energy costs annually. The District is seeking approval for an additional 90 sites — to produce an additional 17.5 megawatts of power — over the next two years. Click here for more information.
